Manely Knitting
"You created every part of me, knitting me in my Mother's womb.
For such handiwork, I praise you. Awesome this great wonder!"
Psalm 139:13-14
The prayer shawl ministry was started here in Connecticut in 1998 by Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo, both of whom graduated from the Women's Leadership Institute at the Hartford Seminary, a program of applied feminist spirituality then directed by Professor Miriam Therese Winter, MMS. The complete story of these women and their inspired ministry can be found at www.shawlministry.com.
The knitters at St. Mark's are part of what is now a nationwide ministry that provides prayer shawls for people facing illness or distress of any kind. Shawls are knitted intentionally and prayerfully, and are given to anyone who requests one with hope that they will provide comfort, hope and solace. Prayer shawls are a tangible reminder of our interconnectedness and of the hope that lies in each stitch as it does in each moment. On the third Saturday of the month, St. Mark's knitters meet at 9:30 am in the library. You are welcome to join us for a morning of prayerful knitting. Our shawls are displayed in the undercroft and are available to anyone in the community. Please call the church office at 860-429-2647 if you would like to receive one.
